Case Study - Award Worthy Homes

Nestled in the picturesque countryside near Harpenden, Doone Brae is an exclusive development of five eco-friendly, energy-efficient detached homes.

Designed to maximise both planning potential and environmental performance, the project combines innovative construction methods with carefully selected exterior finishes to create homes that sit naturally within their rural surroundings. Built using the Lowfield Larsen panel system supplied by Lowfield Timber Frames, the development prioritised sustainability, thermal efficiency and build quality from the outset. However, achieving the desired external appearance while maintaining these performance standards required a modern cladding solution.

Why Brick Slips?

The construction method incorporated insulated raft foundations and Larsen panels, both of which required an external cladding system. While traditional brickwork would have added weight and complexity, brick slips offered the perfect solution.

Brick slips enabled the development to achieve the timeless appearance of traditional brick construction without compromising the performance benefits of the timber frame and Larsen panel system. Their lightweight nature made them ideal for the build-up, while still delivering the authentic texture, colour variation and character associated with genuine brickwork.

The flexibility of brick slips also allowed the design team to combine materials creatively, pairing them with charred timber cladding to create a distinctive architectural aesthetic.

 Choosing The Brick Tile Company

When researching suppliers, the client compared several brick slip manufacturers before selecting The Brick Tile Company.

Competitive pricing was an important factor, but equally crucial was the company's ability to meet the project programme. The lead times aligned perfectly with the construction schedule, ensuring that progress on site could continue without delays.

Throughout the specification process, the team at The Brick Tile Company provided the support and product availability required to keep the project moving efficiently.

Product Selection

Blend 32 brick slip was carefully chosen to complement the development's contemporary rural design. The warm tones and natural texture of the brick slips provided a striking contrast against the dark charred timber cladding, helping to break up the elevations while creating visual interest.

Installation Process

One of the major advantages of the brick slip system was the ease of installation.

The brick slips were installed directly onto the battened Larsen panel structure, creating a straightforward and efficient installation process. The system integrated seamlessly with the wider construction methodology, helping maintain programme efficiency while ensuring a high-quality finish.

The lightweight nature of the brick slips reduced handling requirements compared to traditional masonry, while the installation system allowed for consistent alignment and detailing across all elevations.

The Finished Result

The completed homes demonstrate just how effectively brick slips can replicate the appearance of traditional brickwork.

The façades have a strong visual presence and complement the rural setting beautifully, while the combination of brick slips and charred timber creates a contemporary yet timeless architectural statement.

Perhaps the greatest testament to the product's authenticity is the reaction from visitors and passers-by. Many are surprised to discover that the elevations are finished with brick slips rather than traditional brickwork, highlighting the quality of the finished installation.

Recognition

The success of the development has not gone unnoticed. Doone Brae was entered into the Timber House of the Year awards, reflecting the project's innovative use of modern construction techniques and sustainable building practices.

Doone Brae demonstrates how brick slips can play a vital role in modern, sustainable construction projects. By delivering the appearance of traditional brickwork alongside the practical benefits of lightweight installation and compatibility with advanced building systems, brick slips enabled the project team to achieve both their aesthetic and performance objectives.

Combined with charred timber cladding, the brick slips helped create a distinctive and award-worthy development that blends seamlessly into its surroundings while showcasing the possibilities of contemporary construction.
