Brick Slips in Scotland

Scotland is a vast and varied country, from the more densely populated south central area across the M8 to the highlands and islands, it has a broad cultural background, but from a brick perspective, the country for the most part has the same spectrum of brickwork.

Scotland boasts a lot of stone houses, but in terms of brickwork the primary colouring is red, which comes from the type of clay and minerals within it that has been dug and fired into brick across centuries.

However, across the last 50 or so years, as with most of the UK, the advent of larger brick companies and more widespread transport networks has diluted any geographical preferences for certain colours of brick.

Other than where planning authorities require similar to existing facades, any kind of brick, or brick slip, can be sourced and used for housing, retaining walls or commercial buildings.

Brick Cladding in Scotland

Whether your project is major (new cladding, recladding) or minor (retaining wall, outbuilding), its success could depend on choosing materials that fit the local brick aesthetic. Since local authorities prefer brick, and brick slips offer the same approved look as traditional brick, they are the safest choice.

If you're looking to match existing brickwork either from your home, locally or even from an inspiration photo, simply send us a photo and we'l get you the closest from over 200 different brick types for your project.

Internal Brick Slips Scotland

External brickwork may act as inspiration, but it doesn't necessarily need to be repeated internally. For the most part, you can choose which of our blends you prefer, pairing it with whichever mortar colour you like best. People don't usually associate the bricks they see internally with what is external - either a different brick, stonework or render - it's just seen as part of the internal decor.

If your property is listed, then this will be different and approval will likely be required. Some commercial properties may also have an approval process to go through, either with local authorities or potentially with freeholders.

Aesthetically, whether in a kitchen, bathroom, as a feature wall or as flooring, you can choose the style you want. Whilst Scotland over all may have more red brick from local factories, our reclaimed collection of cream, brown, and yellow brick slips are also very popular. Customers across the UK often choose the pre-aged, rustic charm of our reclaimed collection of brick slips to create a timeless look.

The reality of internal use, though, is that they can be used anywhere, and the choice of which blend and which colour mortar is entirely down to you.
